Mrs. Clara Jenkins Fletcher’s earthly journey began Sunday, February 11, 1923 in Clarksville, Montgomery County, Tennessee, the daughter of the late Margaret Dixon Jenkins and the late William Jenkins, Sr. Also preceded in death by her loving husband, Willard Fletcher; son, Willard Fletcher, Jr.; brothers: Lynwood Jenkins, Leonard Jenkins; sisters: Louise McNair, Nanny B. Stewart and Georgia Fletcher; grandparents: Charlie and Ella McReynolds Jenkins; aunts: Ruth, Emily, Arminta, Uretha and Martha; uncles: Herman, Charles, Ralph, Solomon, Earl and Henry Jenkins. On Tuesday, February 7, 2023, Mrs. Clara finished her race and entered into the Master’s joy.
She accepted Christ as her Savior at an early age and united with Ebenezer AME Church. She loved working with her Church Family and served as a steward, sang in the choir, church secretary, member of Willing Workers and head of hospitality. She was a devoted woman of God. She loved going to church, no matter what was going on, she dressed to go to church.
Mrs. Clara received her education in the Montgomery County School System and was a graduate of the Historic Burt High School.
On Thursday, May 24, 1945, Clara united in holy matrimony with the love of her life Willard Fletcher and to this union three children were born.
Mrs. Clara never met a stranger and always made everyone feel welcome. She was always sweet, pleasant and soft spoken, but her words were respected by all that she came in contact with. Her family was very special to her and she loved them all dearly. She enjoyed word puzzles, jigsaw puzzles, gardening and cooking. All who knew and loved her will sorely miss her presence and smiling face.
She leaves precious memories to be cherished and shared by her two daughters: Gwendolyn (Russell) Gunn, St. Louis, MO and Debra (Turhan) Payne-Bey, Clarksville, TN; seven grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren; brother, William Jenkins, Jr., Clarksville, TN; sisters: Elizabeth Sanders, Gallatin, TN and Helen Moody, Cleveland, OH, and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
