Mary LaVern Ellis Bryant, age 85, of Clarksville, TN, went home to be with the Lord Thursday, January 4, 2024, at the Alive Hospice Residence in Nashville.
Mary LaVern Ellis Bryant was born to the late L.M. Ellis, Sr. and Sadie Stewart Ellis on November 2, 1938, in Woodlawn, TN. She was known to her family and friends by her middle name, LaVern.
LaVern graduated from Burt High School. After graduation, she began training as a nurse at the Fort Campbell Army Hospital. She was honored to have been the first African American female to complete the nurse training at Fort Campbell. In her 42 years of service as a licensed practical nurse she cared for many veterans and the elderly.
LaVern was a devout believer in Jesus Christ. In the midst of trials, she exhibited a strong faith in the Lord and never wavered. She was a faithful member of the Woodlawn Elizabeth Missionary Baptist Church. LaVern’s happiest moments were when she was spending time with her dog Taco, talking on the phone with her loved ones, doing crossword puzzles and crocheting clothing for the homeless at Manna Café Ministries.
LaVern was preceded in eternal rest by her father, L. M. Ellis, Sr.; mother, Sadie Stewart Ellis; husband, Sylvester Bryant; sister, Cheryl Ellis Meadows; and brother, L. M. Ellis, Jr. She is survived by her sister Susie Ellis Barker and her beloved nieces and nephews who loved her dearly.
LaVern was adored by all who knew and loved her. She departed from this world, but never from our hearts leaving numerous relatives, close friends and former co- workers whose lives she also touched.
Public visitation will be 1-2 p.m., Saturday, January 13th at Woodlawn Elizabeth Missionary Baptist Church. A Celebration of Life service will follow the public visitation and will begin at 2 p.m.
**In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of our dear Mary LaVern Ellis Bryant to either the Manna Café Ministries or the Humane Society of Clarksville.
